Front keeps it in check

 Water temperatures were nearing 80 degrees on the flats going into the end of last week. Then came a girl named La Nina.

The cold front dropped the water temperatures some 15 degrees the past few days. While it has been an immediate set back on the current fishing, the front will play a key role in slowing down the movements of fish. A movement that was moving just way to darn fast.

Inshore trout, snook, redfish, jacks and cobia have been the main targets. Fish are very much spread out from the backcountry to the barrier islands and offshore grass flats.

Typical spring high pressure has dominated the weather. Just a day or two of barometric pressure above 30.00 inches is enough to make things a challenge. When Mother Nature takes a liking to us, well the bite has been hot. Grand slams (snook, reds,trout,tarpon) are the norm. Trout are making up the most numbers, snook, reds, and few tarpon can be taken with some effort.

Nearshore kingfish, grouper, and permit can be found over structure when the winds allow. As in most years past, spring kingfishing is best from the Egmont shipping channel to Dunedin. Grouper are being taken from 10 feet to 35 feet of water. And the permit can be found on secret wrecks, particularly in 35 feet of water.

In Tampa Bay, Giant Tarpon have begun to bend some rods. The Skyway Bridge is always a great place at this time. The traditional dredge holes and such far up the Bay are holding fish and hardly any fishing pressure.
