Brian Timmons shows off his best snook of the day taken on a trip last week that included more snook, oversized reds and trout.

Spring is here and optimum fishing has just begun. We are off to a somewhat bumpy start as the harsh winter is taking some time to recover from. The end result has been some excellent days punctuated with a few days not worthy of a mention. Rolling with the variables in the weather patterns the last few years is staple in adjusting to some unusual patterns of wild game.

Trout have been outstanding. When the bite light has been on, catching 50 or more spawning sized trout has been a snap in our south reaches. To the north, the first of the gators were taken scattered the past few days. We are on a quarter moon now, it would seem as we wax towards the new moon next week, the north trout should be massed in all of the classic locations.

Snook are up to there typical blazes of spring glory. One day they are on fire only to be taking a siesta the next.  I have been very impressed with the numbers of slot-sized fish being taken in the area. However, I am concerned about the numbers of over the slot trophy fish, as they seem fewer and further between than ever. Perhaps now with the exposure of scaled sardines and the number of people pursuing this most prized fish, they are just savvier than ever. On the flats at least, monster snook  are eluding capture in the style of  what it was in just yesteryear.

Lindsey Clarke is all smiles for the camera with an oversized red.

Reds have been outright tough to find. There was one huge school pushing around in the backwater through last week. The fish were very spooky and were biting best by soaking cut bait on the flat that they were milling on. Monday strong southerly winds accompanied and enhanced the big tides of the full moon and the school was not to be seen again since. March and April typically are great months for schooling reds; perhaps like everything else, they are slightly behind a few weeks.

Nearshore, grouper and Spanish mackerel are being taken in good numbers. The kings are just getting started which means the permit and tarpon will be close behind.

A few giant tarpon have been jumped at night around the area bridges. This is typical in pre-season as it is theorized these are fish that have wintered here. Thus far it seems the migration of is giant tarpon just getting started with some fish now showing up in Key West Harbor. Traditionally that puts us 10 to 14 days out. With Mother Nature spreading some sunshine upon us this spring-we a looking forward to what should be the best giant tarpon season in many years. Let’s get it on!
