All is Alright
Recent cold conditions iced the cake for a good spring pattern. Water temperatures
dropped into the low 50s and sent the fish running for shelter in the back. This
sets up a normal spring pattern to begin in just a few short weeks.
Normally this can put a major damper on winter outings. Fortunately many species shot right to the power plant and those willing to brave the wind chills were rewarded with a variety of species. A migrating school of large Spanish mackerel found refuge for many days in the ditch just outside the plant. Anglers at barrels were taking jacks, pompano and permit in impressive numbers. A slow warming trend has occurred the past few days. A warm southerly wind was the green light for a major pompano bite in the ditch just off the Anclote pier. Gator trout joined the pomps for a spectacular bite the past two days. A few cobia were found riding the wings of large rays on the adjacent flats. The rocks and oysters featured in several bays and bayous produced redfish on the top of the flood tide. Not a bad situation. A good cold weather bite and the ingredients to keep other species in their winter spas. When the time is right, these fish will move into the spring staging areas yielding a very productive spring bite. Bounty Hunter II left my hands this week, and the Bounty Hunter III (a 2000 Dorado 23) will be ready for delivery this upcoming week. A week of rigging, and the plan is right on schedule. Special thanks to Scott McPherson who bailed me out by offering his hull (not yet out of the factory) when a local custom boat manufacturer backed out of his dead line. Thanks Scott. Dates between now and July are becoming increasingly tight. If you are planning a spring flats trip or the peak of the GiantTarpon season, now is the time to get your days for 2000.
