Trout Dominate

In typical winter fashion, trout have been the main staple on the flats. The edges if the Intercoastal, barrier and spoil islands, and creek mouths have been the primary theaters of probability. The odd ball bluefish, pompano, mackerel and ladyfish are making the bag as well.

Tight to the shoreline a few reds are finding warmth near the oyster bars, particularly those situated to adjacent deep water and creek / river mouths. Flounder are being taken in the sand butting up to these oyster bars as well. Jigs and live shrimp are accounting for all of the species mentioned above.

Snook remain in the deeper cuts, canals, rivers, springs and deep creeks. As typical at this time of year, I am seeing more of them sunning on the mud, oyster bars, and other structures facing the Southern Hemisphere then we are catching them. We are few weeks away yet from the full fury of these most prized neo-tropical fish.

Overall the winter has been mild. As I mentioned previously, our most significant fronts come mostly in December. With all things being the same and with continued warm days, spring fishing will get an early boost. The biological time clock will hold these fish in winter patterns, but as the days get longer, we will be well on our way.

Giant tarpon season is right around the corner. Those seeking dates in 2000 are strongly urged to get them now for the peak of the peak.

Screaming Drags and Tired Arms!
